be like the trees

Stand tall and proud

Sink deep into your roots

Be content with your natural beauty

Go out on a limb

Drink plenty of water

Remember your roots and enjoy the view

-Ilan Shamir

Down my street between the parked cars and the sidewalk stand three crabapple trees. For the past couple of weeks I have witnessed the unfolding of these beauties. First the small rosebud type blooms appeared in clumps together adorning the branches. Then deep pink bloom transitioned into lush pink blooms. Eventually the petals turned into a light shade of pink and began to fall under foot on the grass and sidewalk. The romantic within me sees this pink carpet of petals as the aisle leading me to nature’s altar. I am immersed in her wonder. The blooms and trees are a sign of perfection, beauty and surrender.

Surrender is not just letting go of the unknown, it’s welcoming the unknown.

I love the line in the above poem, go out on a limb. Some say that’s where the best and juiciest fruit reside. It reminds me to take risks, not to be afraid to reach out and grab what I desire.

I believe humans are more like trees than we realize. I believe within each one of us are rings like those that make up the trunk of the tree. Whether it’s cellular memory from our ancestors or karma from past lives. Skin being the most superficial ring, and as it moves deeper beneath the surface to fat, connective tissue, muscles, bone, bone marrow we descend into the core of our beings, the mystery/magic of life. The outer rings, our present life experience, such as our feet and hands and the inner rings, ancestral cellular memory/karma, such as shoulders, spine, pelvis.

Trees shift with the seasons; blossoming, producing fruit and dropping leaves when the time is right. As trees rhythmically accept the seasons of life, are we willing to move through the seasons of our lives? Not rushing the process, rather accepting each small or big change?

As a mother of two teens, the end of the school year and the transition from spring to summer leaves me feeling wobbly, slightly unearthed. My rhythm shifts as the days grow longer, I desire to spend more time outdoors as the weather warms, I crave cooler foods; salads, berries, and vegetables cooked by the sun. I must find a new rhythm and in doing so my yoga practice helps me maintain my roots, keeping me grounded. My breath helps me ride the waves of change; quickening and slowing, ebbing and flowing.

If you are feeling this shift, join me on your mat connecting with those deeper rings of your being. Finding your center, wherein lies the calm...enjoying the view and your natural beauty!

With gratitude

Love,

Rebecca
